Friend Studio Launches SS 2024 Ghana Capsule Collection At Merchants On Long

South Africa, November 2024 — Friend Studio, the art and fashion atelier founded by artist Sylvia Friend, is proud to unveil its SS24 Ghana Capsule Collection, entitled For The Locals.

This limited-edition collection exemplifies Friend Studio’s dedication to cultural storytelling, artisanal craftsmanship, and sustainable fashion practices. The collection will make its exclusive debut in South Africa at Merchants on Long, in Cape Town, and will be available in store for a short run from December 9 – 14.

In line with Friend Studio’s design philosophy, the Ghana Capsule brings contemporary African narratives to a global audience through thoughtful collaboration with local artisans. The centrepiece of the collection includes four printed silk button-down shirts, and a selection of one-of-one pieces, including two dresses, a pair of jeans, and a skirt, each featuring original artwork reflective of Ghanaian contemporary life. Additionally, the original artworks will be available for sale.

“The For The Locals Capsule Collection was inspired by the cultural heritage and artistry of Ghana,” says Friend, who is usually based in Los Angeles. “While visiting, I travelled through Accra, Cape Coast, Kumasi, and Sunyani and I noticed a stark through-line where traditional craftsmanship met a vibrant, modern design sensibility.

“I wanted to capture that duality—the deep-rooted pride in heritage and the forward-looking spirit of Ghana’s youth, and I think this comes through well in the way the prints in this collection are directly inspired by my own artwork, yet thoughtfully reimagined to echo the bold patterns and symbolic language often found in Ghanaian textiles.” Each piece is intended as a celebration of tradition but with an edge that speaks to contemporary tastes, bridging the old with the new and the local with the global.

“Working with Friend Studio honours Merchants on Long’s commitment to integral sustainability,” says Jeanine Benjamin, COO Merchants on Long. “By collaborating with different artists, and artisans on a global local level, we promote economic opportunity and enable an impact that reverberates far beyond the merchandise that is available to purchase. There is a story that spans continents and time frames.”

“For me, it’s important that Friend Studio transcends traditional boundaries, uniting art and fashion in a shared mission of preserving artistry and promoting local craftsmanship,” adds the artist.
