Stay Right, Race Right: Accommodation Tips to Get You Across the Finish Line

South Africa’s love for sport runs deep, from packed rugby stadiums to the country’s unwavering support for cricket, soccer, and endurance events. Among our many iconic sporting traditions are two legendary races that test the limits of human endurance—the Two Oceans Marathon in April and the Comrades Marathon in June. These events draw thousands of local and international runners (and spectators) each year, all eager to push their limits while taking in some of the most breathtaking scenery the country has to offer. But as runners prepare for these gruelling challenges, there’s more to consider than just training schedules, race-day strategies, and logistics—it’s about the whole experience.

For example, accommodation. “The right accommodation can make a surprising difference to your race day,’ says Shaun Lamont, Managing Director of First Group Hotels and Resorts. “When deciding where to stay, it’s worth considering how the right choice can aid your performance, recovery, and overall well-being. And with both races coinciding with the school holidays, you can extend the trip into more than just a race weekend,” he adds. “Why not make it a family adventure, or enjoy some rest and relaxation with friends? Let the finish line be followed by a memorable getaway, where everyone can enjoy the journey together and create lasting, magical memories.”

Lamont provides some tips on selecting and securing the perfect place to stay for race weekends:

1. Think Beyond Just a Bed: While a B&B may be ideal for a quick, no-frills stay, a resort, for example, offers a full range of amenities that can elevate your race experience.  Of course, a comfortable bed is essential, but resorts such as First Group properties go further, typically featuring gyms and spas (for post-race recovery), with many located close to the beaches of KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape to soak up some sun. With diverse family-friendly activities, bars, and restaurants, there’s plenty to keep everyone entertained. It’s not just about where you sleep—it’s about creating a complete getaway where you can unwind and recharge.

2. Location, Location, Location: Consider traffic, road closures, and accessibility when choosing your accommodation. For the Two Oceans Marathon, look at First Group’s Riviera Suites in Cape Town for easy access to the race and breathtaking ocean views. If you’re running the Comrades Marathon, Breakers in Umhlanga or La Montagne in Ballito are great options for post-race relaxation while The Palace All-Suite in Durban offers both beach and city convenience with resort-style comforts and proximity to the start/finishing line.

3. Self-Catering Options: Look for accommodation that offers the flexibility to prepare your own meals if you’re following a specific nutrition plan, while also providing the convenience of an onsite restaurant to indulge and unwind at post your race.

4. Group Stays: If you’re travelling with a support crew or running team, choose accommodation that caters to groups. Apartments or resorts with self-catering options offer more flexibility and cost-effectiveness while creating a sense of camaraderie and mutual encouragement.

5. Special Race Weekend Packages: It goes without saying that booking early, considering the thousands of runners all requiring accommodation too, is crucial. The earlier you book – many make a reservation up to a year in advance – the better your chances of securing the accommodation you want. Often hotels, resorts, and guesthouses in the area offer exclusive deals during race weekends. These packages typically include early check-ins, special rates for runners, pre-race meals, and post-race recovery services such as massages and access to spas. So, be sure to enquire about special race weekend packages and runner-friendly services when booking.

“Whether you’re aiming for a personal best or supporting friends or family, accommodation can make all the difference. From ensuring you’re well-rested to providing post-race comfort and relaxation, it sets the tone for an enjoyable race weekend. “So, plan ahead, book early, and make the most of every moment.  Remember, your race is not just about how fast you cross the finish line—it’s about the entire journey and the memories you make along the way,” Lamont concludes.
