Made in Mzansi, built for the world – Hisense SA showcases local manufacturing power at Proudly SA Summit in JHB

Hisense SA is proud to participate in Proudly SA’s 2025 Summit in Johannesburg this week, on 17 and 18 March 2025. The summit provides an opportunity to showcase next generation products manufactured at the state-of-the-art Hisense factory in Atlantis, Western Cape. This facility demonstrates the power of international business in partnership with local talent to drive job creation and boost economic growth.

Hisense SA was the company’s first major manufacturing investment outside of China. Subsequently, this investment was boosted by the launch of the R350 million factory in the Western Cape in 2013. The company has, to date, grown to become one of the biggest consumer electronics manufacturers in the country, underscoring the continued attractiveness of South Africa as both a vital market and a strategic investment destination.

“Hisense SA continues to make a significant economic impact through its deep-rooted investment in our local economy, contributing to industrial growth, job creation, and market leadership. Since entering the South African market in 1996, the company has grown into a dominant player, achieving sales revenue of R8.08 billion in 2024” shares Alex Chen, Brand Marketing Manager at Hisense SA.

He states that their Atlantis-based industrial park, established in partnership with the China Africa Development Fund, has an annual production capacity of 1 million televisions and 500 000 refrigerators, not only meeting local demand but also exporting to over 20 African countries: “This expansion has positioned South Africa as a strategic manufacturing hub, strengthening regional trade while reducing reliance on imports. Hisense SA also holds the largest market share in TV (33.9%) and refrigerator sales (34.9%), solidifying our status as a key driver in South Africa’s home appliance industry”.

Beyond industrial investment, Hisense SA also plays an active role in socio-economic development by fostering corporate social responsibility initiatives and supporting education, environmental sustainability, and cultural exchanges. The company has established scholarships, community support programs, and partnerships with organizations like the Orion Disabled Persons Organization and Kids Haven orphanage.

In November 2024, Hisense collaborated with the Western Cape Government to launch South Africa’s very first television Museum in Cape Town, emphasizing the relationship between technological advancements and cultural heritage in SA. These initiatives play a key role in contributing to economic upliftment, skills development, and stronger ties between South Africa and China, reinforcing the company’s long-term commitment to local economic growth.

“Hisense SA offers valuable insights for international companies seeking to navigate the South African business landscape. We are eager to collaborate with our local partners to optimize the rewarding operational environment in South Africa,” adds Luna Nortje, Deputy General Manager at Hisense SA. ” We are proud of our capacity to meet the needs of the South African market through our local facility, relying on local labour and resources. At the Proudly SA summit, you can engage with some of our premium products, all proudly made in Atlantis.”

“We remain committed to playing a critical role in creating employment opportunities that contribute to the effort to eradicate unemployment, poverty and inequality in South Africa. We trust that our participation in the Proudly SA Summit as an investment success story will help to showcase the country as a great place to do business, with the workforce needed to produce world-class products,” concludes Nortje.
