Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital receives R300K+ donation of washing machines & air con units to improve patient experiences, from Hisense SA

In a heartfelt gesture of support to one of Africa’s largest and most vital healthcare institutions, Hisense SA today officially handed over a donation exceeding R300 000 in laundry appliances and air conditioning units to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital (CHB). The initiative marks a powerful commitment to dignity in healthcare, corporate citizenship, the wellbeing of frontline medical staff and patients alike.

The donation included 20 top-loader washing machines with a retail value of R6 999 each, 20 tumble dryers with a retail value of R6 999 each, and 7 air conditioning units with a combined retail value of R69 999. The occasion forms part of Hisense SA’s “Loads of Laundry” initiative, through which the company continues to deliver state-of-the-art laundry appliances to institutions and organisations that are in need.

Further elevating the impact of this donation is the installation of all seven aircon units, a cost generously covered in full by Hisense SA and their long-standing distributors, Filibiz and Atlas Appliances, who together pledged installation support to the value of R40 000.

Reflecting on the collaboration, Ms. Luna Nortjie, Deputy General Manager of Hisense SA, shared: “When we learned of the challenges facing Baragwanath, particularly the lack of laundry appliances and cooling in the height of Joburg’s summer heat, we knew we had to act. It is an honour for Hisense SA to play a small role in restoring dignity to the hospital environment – not only for the patients, but for the dedicated staff who serve them daily. We are proud to be here today, and we are committed to continuing this journey of impact, together.”

The gesture follows months of collaborative planning between Hisense SA and hospital leadership, prompted by a growing number of complaints about inadequate laundry facilities and the hospital’s sweltering summer heat, which affected both patients and its staff.

Dr. Nthabiseng Makgana, CEO of Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, welcomed the donation and acknowledged the partnership as a beacon of shared responsibility: “This donation is more than just machines – it’s about creating a healing space, where patients feel cared for, and our medical staff are equipped to do their best. We are deeply grateful to Hisense SA and their partners for stepping forward with practical support and a long-term commitment to providing public institutions in our country with access to the technology they so desperately need.”

Media were invited to attend a walkabout to witness the installed units and gain deeper insight into the history and operations of this iconic hospital.

The initiative, taken by the South African entity of the multinational Chinese company, reaffirms Hisense SA’s continued dedication to local impact and its ongoing efforts to uplift public institutions with advanced, energy-efficient technologies that meet real community needs.
