Inside Skin Renewal: Vision, Innovation & the Future of Aesthetic Wellness in South Africa

With over two decades of dedication to holistic beauty, Skin Renewal has become a leader in the medical aesthetics space—transforming lives through a fusion of science, wellness, and personalised care. In this in-depth Q&A, we speak with co-founder and visionary force behind the brand, to explore the journey, philosophy, and future of Skin Renewal.

  1. Skin Renewal has become one of South Africa’s leading aesthetic clinics. What inspired you to start this journey?

Myself and my partner, Victor Snyders founded Skin Renewal out of necessity and passion for holistic beauty and well-being. Initially operating from our home, the journey began organically when the demand for my expertise exceeded the limitations of our home office. We secured a small premises in Rivonia before establishing our first full clinic in Parkhurst. Driven by patient demand and our commitment to retaining dynamic staff, Skin Renewal gained momentum, evolving into one of South Africa’s leading aesthetic practices today.

I believe that I have a deep understanding of the connection between internal health and external appearance, which has inspired me to create a space that has combined advanced treatments with patient-centred care. Victor brought his entrepreneurial vision and operational expertise, ensuring the brand’s expansion while maintaining its core values. Together, it is through this innovative approach and dedication to empowering patients that has positioned Skin Renewal as a world-class leader in aesthetics, transforming lives through cutting-edge treatments and holistic solutions.

  1. How has Skin Renewal evolved over the years, and what sets it apart from other skincare brands?

I like to consider myself a life-long learner with an endless quest to expand my knowledge.  Both Victor and I continue to be in search of the best global practices and how to offer South African patients the most extensive range of treatment options. All Skin Renewal journeys commence with a doctor’s consultation. My team of medical aesthetic doctors are all trained by me on an ongoing basis as I procure the latest advancements from the global stage. Our team of doctors are equipped to script a variety of solutions, as the essence of a Skin Renewal skin care journey is the multiplier effect, and that one-plus-one equals a lot more.  We create a combination of treatments for our patients rather than to simply script a once off treatment.

The 20 years of practice has taught me that it is through ‘add on’ treatments that the real effect happens. Skin Renewal is able to accommodate all skin types due to the procurement team’s extensive research into the best devices for all skin types.

A fundamental Skin Renewal difference is the pillars of health. It is in addressing each of these pillars that we are able to ensure that a patient journey is holistic and that lifestyle factors are taken into account – it’s not only about skin but about overall wellness.

  1. What’s your philosophy when it comes to skincare and aesthetic treatments?

It’s about understanding that every skin concern results from your body’s uniqueness. Our skins are merely dashboards for our body and overall health and a glowing, even skin-tone can only be achieved through addressing the patient’s lifestyle and understanding the deep-seated causes and then by implementing our pillars of health in their plan which includes a comprehensive homecare regime to support the in-clinic treatments.

  1. With so many clinics nationwide, how do you ensure consistency in quality and service?

Our business operates using the well knowns 80/20 ratio. Only 20 % of our staff are patient facing the remaining 80% are in the engine room. I believe in employing the best in each element of my business in terms of training, marketing, operations, PR, procurement, digital integration and so on.

I have an exceptional team of medical aesthetic doctors with whom I meet monthly and engage with daily. Communication is key and we are fortunate enough to have our head office staff whose sole role is to focus on the consistent and impressive patient journey. We have a dedicated protocol and incidents team to ensure that any anomalies are addressed as they occur and dealt with swiftly.

At the end of the day, it’s about employing the best in business and ensuring that communication is a two-way stream where we can troubleshoot and create as a team.

Skincare & Treatments

  1. What are the most common skin concerns among South Africans, and how does Skin Renewal address them?

Acne and pigmentation. Due to our harsh climate, we see a lot of sun related conditions such as pigmentation which is also very difficult to diagnose and treat. We have multiple options on how to address each skin condition depending on the patient’s budget and time frames available to them.

Depending on the severity of the acne it can be treated with laser Genesis or Pico laser. Both of which are superb treatments which encourage cellular regeneration and even skin-tone. PDT and peels to clear, exfoliate and calm the skin are also very effective. I believe in addressing the gut health of all patients and Skin Renewal has its own range of very effective supplements which assist in tackling acne. A very popular supplement is our Acne Aid.

Pigmentation is a difficult condition to tackle due to understanding whether the pigmentation is caused due to sun damage or hormones (Melasma). We offer effective treatments such as PicoFractional Laser, Limelight and the MesoBrite treatment for Melasma, which includes the gold standard in terms of addressing pigmentation (Kligmans).

  1. How do you tailor treatments for different skin tones and types, especially in a diverse country like South Africa?

My training team and I work very hard to secure both topical products and devices that we trial on South African skins before bringing them into the country. South African skins are exposed to harsh conditions which vary between each region.

We have worked on addressing a multitude of concerns and providing a comprehensive range of solutions to fit lifestyle and budget. What is also key is that we offer an extensive range of cosmeceuticals taking all skin types into account.

  1. Are there any breakthrough treatments or technologies you’re excited about?

We’re thrilled about several breakthrough treatments and technologies shaping the future of aesthetics. Among these, polynucleotide injectables stand out. Advanced devices like Vydence Pico Laser and Secret RF Needling are tackling ageing causes such as oxidative stress and inflammation with exceptional precision.

At Skin Renewal, we remain committed to bringing these cutting-edge innovations to South Africa, ensuring world-class care for our patients.

  1. How does Skin Renewal approach sensitive skin conditions like acne, pigmentation, and albinism?

My team of medical aesthetic doctors and I do extensive research into the best way to treat all skin conditions but when examining a patient, we are also mindful that some extreme or chronic conditions may be best treated by a dermatologist.

Industry Trends & Challenges

  1. What are some of the biggest skincare myths that you’d like to debunk?
  • You only need an SPF in summer.
  • Oily skin doesn’t need a moisturiser.
  • That with one treatment or one serum you can achieve the skin you desire… it’s a journey.
  • That Botulinum toxin causes blown up/puffy looking lips.
  • That Botox is the only brand of Botulinum toxin.
  • That dermal fillers make you look fake or plastic.
  • Melanin-rich skins don’t age.
  • It’s too late to start looking after your skin once you reach a certain age.
  1. The beauty and aesthetics industry is constantly evolving. What trends do you see shaping the future of skincare in South Africa?

Having spent time abroad and on the global stage there are many facets of the industry which are enormously exciting from the growing demand in the men’s grooming space to the impressive efficacy of cosmeceuticals as well as the advancement in our device technology. There is also noticeable growing demand towards regenerative therapies, emphasising holistic and tailored approaches.

  1. How do you balance medical aesthetics with a more natural approach to beauty?

Balancing medical aesthetics with natural beauty involves combining advanced treatments with holistic wellness. Focus on enhancing rather than altering features, using non-invasive procedures alongside skincare, nutrition, and lifestyle improvements. Prioritise overall health, including mental well-being and gut health, to achieve a harmonious, natural-looking aesthetic that reflects inner vitality.

12. There has been increasing awareness around ethical and sustainable skincare. How does Skin Renewal align with this movement?

First and foremost, Skin Renewal is a medical aesthetics practice, and my role is to ensure that we comply fully with all medical legislation through extensive protocols which I have developed over time. We work closely with a climate change agent and have completed a top-level sustainability audit to incorporate some green building, best practice into our clinics. We, for instance, ensure that all devices are unplugged when not in use, we have spray-nozzle taps where possible to reduce water consumption and have LED lighting.

We have our own reusable Skin Renewal bags to encourage patients to rather use a sustainable bag or simply pop their purchase in their handbag. We stock a wide range of cosmeceuticals, and these containers are either glass or plastic which can be recycled. We will never compromise the medical side of our business and medical ethics to be sustainable which can be a difficult balance to manage and line to tread.

Personal & Inspirational

13.As a leader in the skincare industry, what keeps you motivated?

My thirst for knowledge.  My desire to educate and remain a life-long learner. My desire to positively uplift and transform lives.

14. What advice would you give to young women or aspiring entrepreneurs looking to enter the aesthetics and skincare space?

To young women and aspiring entrepreneurs entering the aesthetics and skincare space, I would say: stay curious, stay innovative. Continuously update your knowledge on the latest advancements and technologies. Empower yourself by building a strong network of mentors and peers. Focus on Holistic well-being—it’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about enhancing lives.

Be authentic and genuine in your approach and always prioritise patient-centred care. Lastly, Believe in yourself and your vision; it’s the foundation of success in this dynamic industry.

15.If you had to choose just one skincare tip that everyone should follow, what would it be?

Wear sunscreen, all year around, every single day.

16.What’s next for Skin Renewal? Are there any upcoming expansions, innovations, or projects we should be excited about?

You never know what lies around the next corner!
