Expert Safari Photography Tips for Stunning Wildlife and Landscape Shots

A visit to the Bothongo Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve is more than just a day out in nature; it’s a front-row seat to unforgettable wildlife moments waiting to be photographed. From powerful predators stalking through the bush to sweeping Highveld landscapes under golden skies, every turn offers a frame-worthy scene.

Whether you’re on a self-drive adventure, guided game drive, or exploring the iconic WonderCave, the reserve provides endless opportunities for stunning wildlife and scenic photography. These expert tips will help ensure your images are sharp, vibrant, and truly reflective of the African wilderness.

Gear Essentials for Success

For wildlife, a telephoto lens of 200mm or longer is essential to maintain a safe distance while capturing fine details like a lion’s mane or a rhino’s texture. Complement it with a wide-angle lens for sweeping landscapes, dramatic skies, or group shots of animals in their habitat. Stabilisation is key: use a tripod or monopod for low-light shots, and set a fast shutter speed (1/500s or higher) to freeze motion during game drives.

Master Composition and Timing

Apply the rule of thirds to place an animal’s eye at a grid intersection for maximum impact, and shoot at eye level for an intimate, engaging perspective. For landscapes, incorporate leading lines, such as dirt roads, ridges, or tree lines, to guide the viewer’s eye into the scene. The golden hours (sunrise and sunset) provide warm, soft light that enhances textures, depth, and mood, perfect for dramatic silhouettes or glowing fur.

Handle Lighting Like a Pro

Midday sun can be harsh so use spot metering to expose correctly for the animal’s fur and avoid blown-out highlights. Experiment with backlighting to create a beautiful halo effect around subjects. Overcast days are a gift, acting as a natural softbox for even lighting, true colours, and reduced contrast. On these days, keep ISO low to minimise noise in shaded areas.

Patience and Respect Yield the Best Shots

Observe animals first to anticipate behaviour, a yawn, roar, or playful interaction. Shoot in burst/continuous mode to catch the decisive moment. Always respect wildlife: remain silent, still, and maintain distance to avoid disturbing natural behaviour. Relaxed animals lead to authentic, compelling images.

Post-Shoot Polish

Once home, edit thoughtfully. Subtle adjustments to contrast, clarity and colour can enhance your images while keeping them true to life.

“Our reserve is a photographer’s paradise, with over 650 animals across 1,200 hectares and stunning Cradle of Humankind scenery,” says Didi Mahlo, Field Guide at the Bothongo Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve. “These tips help visitors not just take photos, but tell stories that capture the true beauty of Africa. Whether it’s your first safari or your hundredth, every shot has the potential to be extraordinary, and we love seeing the unique perspectives our guests bring back.”
