TOPS at SPAR Drives Phuza Right Campaign This Easter

As South Africans embark on Easter travel and family gatherings, TOPS at SPAR is reinforcing its Phuza Right message, encouraging responsible celebration across the country. The initiative calls on all eligible adults to drink responsibly and look out for one another during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

“Celebration and enjoyment must be balanced with well-being, safety and accountability,” said Thami Silwana, National Liquor Executive at TOPS!. Phuza Right is not just about moderate drinking, it’s about fostering a culture of responsibility that protects families, communities and the wider road safety ecosystem.

TOPS at SPAR’s Phuza Right initiative is rooted in the realities South Africans face during peak social periods like Easter such as:

  • In 2025, over 6 million South Africans were on the road during the long weekend, increasing the risk of traffic incidents base on a 2025 Easter Report from the Road Traffic Management.
  • Alcohol‑related crashes remain a concern. Although road fatalities were lower in 2025, each death is one too many, and it is reported that excessive drinking continues to fuel road accidents, domestic violence and other social harms.
  • Responsible drinking saves lives. Simple actions like paced drinking, alternating with water or soft drinks, designated sober driver, and checking in on friends proves to dramatically reduce risk.

At the same time, Easter is about connection. It is a time when families reunite, friendships are rekindled, and communities come together through shared experiences that reflect the richness of South Africa’s social culture.

In true South African style, social gatherings are often centred around food and refreshments, with alcoholic beverages playing a role in bringing people together. From family celebrations and community sports grounds to local food vendors serving traditional favourites like tripe and beef nhloko, these moments foster connection across social boundaries. Phuza Right aims to ensure these experiences are enjoyed responsibly, without compromising safety.

The Phuza Right platform focuses on empowering individuals with the knowledge and tools to make smarter and more responsible choices. This includes practical steps such as:

  • Pacing alcohol consumption, alternating with non-alcoholic beverages, planning transport in advance, and looking out for one another within social groups.
  • Promotes a culture of shared responsibility, where communities actively encourage safer behaviours.

As South Africans take to the roads and gather around tables this Easter, the message remains clear: celebration should never come at the cost of safety or well-being. By making conscious choices and looking out for one another, South Africans can ensure that the spirit of Easter remains one of connection, care and joy long after the long weekend ends.
