Workshop17 turns a midweek night out into a chance to connect, learn and give back

Where else in Joburg can R100 or less buy you an after-work evening with wine, good food, interesting people, a useful conversation and a direct donation to a worthy cause?

That is the promise behind the next Workshop Wednesday at Workshop17 The Bank on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, where guests will gather from 17:00 to 19:00 for a relaxed evening of conversation, connection and community giving.

This month’s event, entitled Beyond Just the Bricks, asks a timely question about the places where we live, work, study and gather: what changes when spaces are designed around people first?

The conversation will be led by Andries Pretorius and Etienne Maritz from Bow&Arc, who are also co-founders of Volley, Pretoria’s premium student accommodation offering. Workshop17 is currently working with Bow&Arc on Workshop17 Hazelwood, now under construction in Pretoria, marking the brand’s first purpose-built location rather than a reimagining of an existing building. The project brings together teams with a similar view on what shared spaces should do: make it easier for people to meet, work, collaborate and feel part of a community.

At this month’s Workshop Wednesday, Pretorius and Maritz will explore how community-first thinking changes the way people use spaces and make them their own. From student living to shared workspaces, mixed-use precincts and the places where people gather after hours, the discussion will look at what makes a space feel welcoming, useful and alive. It is a topic with relevance for entrepreneurs, creatives, designers, property thinkers and anyone interested in how the places we spend time in can shape the way we work, meet and belong.

Workshop Wednesday is no sit-and-listen lecture, it’s an invitation to step out after work, meet like-minded people, exchange ideas and leave with something worth thinking about. Guests can expect wine, delicious snacks, an easy networking environment and a speaker session designed to get the room talking.

For Workshop17, the format reflects the brand’s belief that shared spaces matter most when people use them to meet, work, learn and build something together.

“Workshop Wednesdays are built around the kind of conversations that become richer when people are in the same room,” says Penelope Meniere, National Marketing Manager at Workshop17. “They give people a chance to listen, question, meet and be part of something useful. You can’t get that from a YouTube video. This month’s topic speaks directly to the way we think about space at Workshop17, and the evening also carries a bigger purpose. Every ticket sold will support Tswalo House, which makes each seat in the room matter.”

At each Workshop Wednesday, 100% of ticket sales are donated to the speaker’s charity of choice. All ticket sales from this event will be donated to Tswalo House, an impact organisation that relies on community generosity to keep its doors open, the lights on and the babies in its care warm. Ticket sales will help fund essentials such as baby formula, nappies, medical check-ups and 24-hour specialised care.

In practical terms, that ticket buys a place at a worthwhile event but more importantly, it helps provide care for babies who need safety, warmth and support.

Tickets are R50 for Workshop17 members and R100 for non-members, and include wine, snacks, the live speaker conversation and the opportunity to meet other curious, creative and entrepreneurial Joburgers.
