Cape Vulture Nature Reserve Blends Sport and Conservation at Cape Epic

Cape Vulture Nature Reserve (CVNR) showcased its unique combination of nature conservation and sporting excellence at the prestigious Cape Epic event in Cape Town. Cyclists Herman Fourie and Keegan Tullis, racing in CVNR cycling gear and representing both CVNR Sports and the Songo Charity XCC, secured an impressive 14th place overall and 3rd in the African Jerseys category.
Driven by a mission to protect nature while empowering local communities, CVNR’s innovative conservation model came to life through this sporting partnership. Inspired by other impactful global sports initiatives, Fourie and Tullis competed not only as athletes but as advocates for sustainable tourism, education, and employment opportunities at the reserve.
The Cape Vulture Nature Reserve’s trails present the perfect terrain for training with its varied routes and technical challenges. The ground closely resembles the demands of multi-stage bike races. The area’s scenery provides important altitude changes, making it ideal for building climbing strength.
“I grew up on a farm in Limpopo where my love for cycling began at a young age,” shared Fourie. Tullis, originally from KwaZulu‑Natal and currently pursuing a degree in Nature Conservation, added, “My riding began at the end of high school, participating in the Spur School Series and local KZN ROAG races where my passion for the sport really grew.”
This collaboration underscores CVNR’s commitment to conservation, community development, and the power of sport to inspire meaningful change.
