Jacaranda FM’s Philicity Reeken Discovers Why Mauritius Is the Ultimate Island Getaway for South Africans

Jacaranda FM’s beloved ‘Breakfast with Martin Bester’ co-host, Philicity Reeken, recently returned from an unforgettable trip to Mauritius, where she experienced the magic of the island first-hand. Her sun-soaked getaway not only reaffirmed Mauritius’ status as a top destination for South African travellers but also highlighted how the island offers something for every kind of holidaymaker.

“The opportunity to explore a country I’ve only ever heard great things about was incredibly special,” says Philicity. “From the moment I arrived, I understood why Mauritius is such a popular choice for South Africans. It’s close, affordable, and absolutely stunning all year round.”

Mauritius continues to draw South African travellers with its winning combination of visa-free travel, direct flights, a wide range of accommodation options and its endless list of activities. But it’s more than just convenience – it’s about variety. “Whether you want adventure, complete relaxation, family fun, or romantic time away, you’ll find it here,” she says.

Staying at Club Med La Plantation d’Albion, Philicity was blown away by the flexibility of the resort. “There’s something for everyone. If you want to do as little as possible, perfect. If you want non-stop activities or are travelling solo, with a partner, with kids or a group – it’s got you covered.”

As a passionate foodie, she also praised the culinary offerings: “The food at the resort was out of this world. I wasn’t surprised so much as delighted. There’s a dish for every taste, every mood, every craving.”

One of the highlights of her trip was a submarine adventure where Philicity embarked on a unique local experience that gave her a whole new perspective on the ocean. “If you’ve ever dreamed of being a mermaid, this is the experience for you. It’s a must-do for ocean lovers.”

Despite her early-morning radio routine, Philicity didn’t miss a beat, even on holiday. “I’m up at sparrow’s fart every day – even earlier on vacation!” she laughs. “But that gave me the chance to see the island wake up. Those early mornings were some of the most beautiful.”

As for what’s next, Philicity’s travel list is growing. “Locally, I’d love to visit Sutherland in the winter to see SALT (The Southern African Large Telescope). Internationally, I’d love to explore Namibia, Sri Lanka, Chile, the Trans-Siberian Railway – it’s a long list!”

Philicity’s journey through Mauritius shows that the island continues to live up to its reputation, not just as a beautiful destination, but as an adaptable, accessible, and inspiring place for South African travellers of all kinds.
