Gourmet food and wine (and whales) lunch event at The Marine Saturday 26 July 2025

The Marine Hotel in Hermanus continues its Saturday Food & Wine Lunch series on Saturday, 26 July 2025, in collaboration with Thorne & Daughters, one of South Africa’s most acclaimed boutique wineries. Guests are invited to enjoy a leisurely winter afternoon of exceptional cuisine brought to the table by Head Chef Oelof Vorster, and expertly paired wines, presented in person by Thorne & Daughters winemaker and founder, John Seccombe.

Overlooking the famed cliff path and ocean beyond, the hotel’s Pavilion Restaurant promises the perfect setting to savour delicious flavours and fine wines, whilst enjoying stimulating conversation and the coastal charm of Hermanus, currently at the height of its whale watching season.

Thorne & Daughters is widely regarded for producing elegant, honest wines that reflect the complexity and beauty of the Cape’s diverse vineyard sites. Working with carefully selected old vineyards across the Western Cape, John Seccombe crafts wines with a natural freshness, balance and restraint. The winery’s flagship white blend, Rocking Horse (2023), will be served as Welcome Wine, followed by some other favourites like the 2023 vintages of Copper Pot Chardonnay and Copper Pot Pinot Noir, and the distinctive red blend Wanderer’s Heart (2022), which have earned the label a loyal following locally and abroad.

Saturday lunch at The Marine will start with a small plate of Ham hock terrine; and a second small plate of Confit duck; followed by main course of Springbok tagliata with rocket, elements of fromage, parmesan, radish crudités, toasted pine nuts and jus; ending with dessert of Genoise sponge cake with citrus elements.

Tickets are R495 per person, including a welcome glass of wine, and wine pairings with the two starter plates and the main course, as well as dessert to end the afternoon on a sweet note.

Visitors to Hermanus are invited to combine the gourmet wine event with whale watching activities and a stay over at The Marine on the weekend of 26 July 2025. The special all-inclusive package (from R4900 for two people sharing) includes two seats at the Saturday Food & Wine Lunch on 26 July, one night’s luxury accommodation in a Double Room, and full breakfast the next morning, complete with a glass of bubbly, a Mimosa or a Bloody Mary.
