Millions of South African hearts warmed by viral social media moment between mother & child in Daveyton

A simple act of love has captured the hearts of millions of South Africans nationwide. A viral cellphone video shared across social media shows a young mother from Daveyton gifting her daughter a brand-new Hisense U53 smartphone: a modest yet deeply meaningful present that brought the little girl to tears of joy. Those who haven’t seen it yet can view the special exchange on X here.

When the video reached the desk of Luna Nortje, Deputy General Manager at Hisense SA, she was profoundly moved. “She surprised her daughter with a Hisense phone, and that small gift inspired such pure gratitude that we knew we had to reach out,” Nortje said. “We wanted to celebrate this young mother for inspiring us all with the love she shares with her daughter. We soon found out it was her birthday and wanted to make sure she’d have one to remember. From groceries and gifts to laughter and cake, we celebrated a mom whose strength reminded us why we do what we do.”

For Hisense SA, the story is more than just a viral moment, it’s a reflection of the brand’s ongoing commitment to uplifting communities and supporting South African families in meaningful ways. Beyond its technology, Hisense SA continues to invest in people, education, wildlife conservation, healthcare, and youth development through numerous initiatives across the country.

For those who may not be aware, the mother in the video is currently battling heart failure. Hisense SA encourages all who can, to please make a donation towards her medical treatment and surgery, via her BackaBuddy campaign.

“We want to be so much more than just a technology brand. We want to be a force for good, and hope that these, and all the other initiatives we work on, will help build a brighter future for South Africa and for all the people who are proud to call this country their home,” concludes Nortje.

This year alone, Hisense SA has donated hundreds of appliances to hospitals, NPOs, science centres, and community organisations. It has supported animal welfare initiatives across the country and provided audio-visual equipment for the Hermanus Whale Festival, leveraging technology to educate visitors about marine conservation. The company has sponsored the tuition, nutrition, and training of a 12-year-old rising soccer star through the Real Madrid Foundation and welcomed 100 unemployed youth from Atlantis into a year-long skills development programme, in partnership with EduPower Skills Academy, MERSETA, and W&RSETA.
