The MATH Wine Club Redefines Johannesburg’s Wine Culture

At MATH Restaurant, every gathering is shaped by intention, good taste, good company, and moments worth remembering. The MATH Wine Club embodies that ethos, offering curated monthly experiences that bring together winemakers, enthusiasts, and the city’s creative crowd.

The next Wine Club evening takes place on Friday, 23 October at Waterfall Corner, with guests welcomed from 18:00 for an 18:30 start. This edition welcomes back the acclaimed Morgenster Wines, whose previous appearance became one of the most talked-about evenings of the series. Their exceptional wines will be paired with an exclusive four-course menu curated by Chef Neo, known for his refined palate and thoughtful approach to flavour.

Designed to make wine culture both refined and accessible, the MATH Wine Club champions discovery through storytelling. Each tasting becomes a shared moment; each pour, a chance to connect. True to the heart of MATH, wine appreciation here is communal rather than exclusive, inviting both seasoned enthusiasts and curious newcomers to explore side by side.

“There’s a certain magic that unfolds when great wine meets great company,” says Puleng Mathabathe, Founder of MATH. “Our community asked for more of that magic and the Wine Club is our way of creating a space where connection, curiosity, and culture come together. It’s all an extension of our motto, When We Gather.”

The experience also honours the remarkable legacy behind Morgenster Wines, a brand rooted in heritage, passion, and uncompromising craftsmanship. Their story begins with Giulio Bertrand, the Italian visionary who fell in love with the Cape Winelands and, in 1992, purchased Morgenster a historic farm dating back 300 years. His mission was simple, to create world-class Bordeaux-style wines and exceptional extra-virgin olive oils.

Guided by the ethos “Where there is quality, there is no compromise,” Bertrand collaborated with legendary winemaker Pierre Lurton of Château Cheval Blanc and Château d’Yquem, elevating Morgenster to international acclaim. With support from the Olive Oil Institute in Perugia, he also introduced 17 specially selected olive varieties pioneering the olive-oil culture South Africa enjoys today.

Today, his legacy endures, and the MATH Wine Club is proud to showcase Morgenster’s craftsmanship in a setting designed for connection, discovery, and shared appreciation.
