No Seat on Campus? A Gauteng Founder’s Answer to South Africa’s Admissions Bottleneck

The School That Adapts to You: One Founder’s Vision for Modern Learning

Professor Rudi Boshoff has spent his life challenging the traditional paths to success. From starting as an entrepreneur at 19 without a university degree to building a successful series of businesses and the Bridgewater Academic Institute, an online higher education institute, he has created a model that prioritizes flexibility, human supervision, and real-world support for learners juggling jobs, family, and other responsibilities. His journey, from late-night study while parenting to guiding students today, shapes BAI’s mission to make education accessible and achievable for everyone.
1. You started fixing cellphones because university wasn’t an option. What did that teach you about learning and opportunity?
It showed me that traditional pathways aren’t the only routes to skill and knowledge. While my peers were in lectures, I was learning by doing, running a small business, solving real problems, and managing clients. By 19, I had purchased property, and I realized that success doesn’t always require a degree. At the same time, I saw how many capable people are left behind in many ways by rigid systems.

2. Why return to study in your 30s?
Curiosity and growth drove me. I started studying in the twilight hours while my oldest son was a newborn, and gradually I fell in love with education. Balancing parenting and study was challenging, but it reshaped how I think, how I solve problems, and inspired me to create new opportunities for others.
3. What makes BAI different?
BAI is an online higher education institute built around the learner, not the technology. We combine flexibility, human supervision, and affordable internationally accredited courses that adapt to people’s lives. Students don’t have to put their careers or families on hold to study, and we focus on meaningful support, checking in regularly, guiding them through challenges, and ensuring they complete their programs successfully. It’s online education that actually works for real life, not just on paper.
4. Why focus on human supervision in online education?
In my experience as an educator, and based on what I’ve seen at peer institutions, completion rates are better when students are fully supported. At BAI, our human supervisors check in regularly, help students navigate challenges, and provide mentorship. This transforms enrollment into meaningful achievement and ensures students are never left to struggle alone.

5. How does BAI maintain affordability without reducing quality?
Being online removes many operational overheads. This allows us to focus resources on what truly matters, including learning, human supervision, and accreditation, so students get full value without compromise.
6. What should someone considering online study prioritize?
I would advise starting by clarifying your goals and what you want to achieve through education. Decide the qualifications you aim for, identify accredited online tertiary institutions, understand the full fees, review timetables, and critically assess the level of human supervision and support offered. Programs that provide regular guidance, mentorship, and check-ins make it much easier to stay on track and achieve meaningful outcomes.
