Bongeziwe Mabandla Unveils Bold New Single “Walila” and Announces Ndingubani Album Pre-Order Ahead of June Release

South African soul powerhouse and three-time SAMA Award-winning artist Bongeziwe Mabandla returns to the forefront with the release of his new single “Walila”. The release marks the third single from his highly anticipated forthcoming album Ndingubani, due 11 June 2026, following the emotional depth of earlier releases “Yilwa” and “Zama.” Alongside the single, Mabandla also announces the official pre-order for the album.

Written by Bongeziwe Mabandla alongside longtime collaborator Tiago Correia-Paulo, “Walila” is a theatrical and darkly humorous reflection on karma and accountability—exploring the idea that every action ultimately finds its return. Built from a simple guitar idea, the song transforms into a vivid narrative about justice, emotional reckoning, and the cyclical nature of human behaviour.

“Walila” is a theatrical and humorous reflection on karma—the idea that our actions always find their way back to us,” says Mabandla. “The song came to me while playing guitar and thinking about how people eventually face the consequences of what they’ve done. I wanted to express that idea simply but vividly, which is where the phrase ‘crying tiny little tears’ came from.”

Drawing on his background in theatre, Mabandla leans into storytelling that is both expressive and cinematic, painting a scene of confrontation where truth and consequence collide.

“My theatre background really shaped the storytelling in this song,” he explains. “I imagined a moment of finally facing someone who had wronged me, with the truth unfolding in front of everyone. Even though the theme is about injustice, the song carries a playful and dramatic energy. ‘Walila’ is ultimately about justice, balance and the beauty of karma over time. It’s funny, bold and quite different from the more uplifting songs I usually write.”

With “Walila,” Mabandla continues to expand the sonic and emotional world of Ndingubani, an album that delves into identity, vulnerability, and transformation through his distinct blend of Afro-soul, folk textures, and contemporary African storytelling.

A Metro FM Award winner and Feather Award recipient, Bongeziwe Mabandla has long been recognised as one of South Africa’s most compelling musical voices. With Ndingubani, he further refines his artistry—balancing introspection with bold narrative choices that continue to push the boundaries of modern African soul.

As anticipation builds toward the album’s 11 June release, “Walila” stands as a striking reminder of Mabandla’s ability to turn deeply personal reflection into universally resonant art—where humour, pain, and poetic justice meet in equal measure.
