Aladdin supporting the Reach Trust this year – Aladdin Shines as Canal Walk Celebrates 23 Years of Magical Theatre

The magic is back. Canal Walk’s much-loved winter theatre production returns this June with a sparkling new take on Aladdin, and it marks a milestone, bringing unforgettable live theatre to Cape Town families.

Canal Walk turns its Centre Court into a theatrical wonderland each winter, delighting audiences with heartwarming stories, rich costumes and original productions that have become a holiday tradition for thousands. This year’s show, Aladdin, promises all the thrills of the Arabian Nights classic, including flying carpets, hidden treasure, a mischievous Genie and a hero who learns what it means to be brave.

“This year marks something special,” says Vanessa Herbst, Canal Walk’s Marketing Manager. “For 23 years, families have made this show part of their winter tradition. We’ve seen generations come through our doors, from wide-eyed toddlers to parents who remember coming here as kids themselves. That connection to the audience is what drives us every single year.”

A Tale Reimagined: Star Power and Stage Magic Behind the Curtain

Based on a timeless tale from The Arabian Nights, this production is set in the bustling streets of old Baghdad. Aladdin follows a young dreamer whose world turns upside down when he stumbles upon a magical lamp. What unfolds is a story of wit, heart and second chances, wrapped in music and wonder.

Bringing this production to life is a powerhouse creative team from AM Productions, led by Fred Abrahamse and Marcel Meyer, who co-wrote the show’s original book. Meyer also composed the music and lyrics, adding a fresh, theatrical energy to this classic tale. The title role is played by Anzio September, with Mekaila Mathys as the fearless Princess Jasmir, while Onela Metuso conjures up magic as the Genie of the Lamp. The ensemble features a dynamic cast who bring flair and humour to every scene, making this production a true blend of stagecraft, storytelling and spectacle.

Every Ticket Counts: Theatre with a Purpose

This year’s production will support The Reach Trust, with a portion of ticket and programme sales going towards early childhood development and digital literacy in underserved Cape Town communities. “Each ticket helps connect young children to learning opportunities,” explains Andrew Rudge, The Reach Trust CEO. “It’s entertainment with real impact.”

Performances run from 28 June to 20 July (closed Mondays), with three shows daily at 11am, 12:30pm and 2pm. Tickets start at R110 per person. Bookings are now open through Webtickets.

Snack combos, kid-friendly treats and affordable programmes will be on sale at the venue, all wrapped into a stress-free, family-first experience. As always, there is no reserved seating, so early arrival is encouraged.

With past productions drawing sell-out crowds, Canal Walk urges the public to secure their seats early. “After 23 years, we’re not slowing down,” adds Herbst. “This year’s show is packed with magic, laughter and a few surprises that audiences won’t see coming.”
